Piece by Piece
‘Piece by Piece’ is a system and product design that focuses on starting a discourse regarding issues of chemical dyes and synthetic materials used in the fashion industry. The final pieces are created using a modular component that can be slotted together to create a larger material which would then form into garments. The pieces are laser cut and then have been naturally dyed across several days to achieve various shades of colours while minimising water, energy and material waste. The component has also been designed in a way that it leaves minimal to no waste when laser cut. The system design focuses on creating a circular and sustainable system which uses natural end of roll fabrics and natural dyes to create the components. Designing a product/service that is user centred helps create an emotionally durable design, as well as extend the lifecycle of the product. Through this method, consumers can also start a conversation regarding chemically dyed clothing, while simultaneously promoting the use of natural dyes as an alternative solution. The final work is intended to be unisex with a loose fit and a neutral earthy colour scheme, however, the fitting and the colour scheme can also be customised to suit the wearability of the user.
